Matthew George

Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis is delighted to announce that Matthew George will become our next Music Director.

Matthew J. George is the John Ireland Distinguished Professor of Music, Director of Bands and Orchestras at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Dr. George holds a D.M.A. degree in conducting from the University of North Texas, an M.M. degree in music education from Southern Methodist University, and a B.M. degree in music education and trumpet performance from Ithaca College.

Dr. George is also the Artistic Director and Conductor of Grand Symphonic Winds and has recently been named the primary conductor of the Lake Wobegon Brass Band.

Active as a conductor and clinician and lecturer, Dr. George has traveled across North, Central, and South Americ, across Europe, Asia, South Asia, Australia, and Africa. Subsequently he maintains a busy schedule as a conductor, both professional and educationally.

Appearing as a guest conductor throughout the world, he regularly works with professional orchestras and bands as well as festival groups of all ages and leads ensembles to music conferences.

As a lecturer, Dr. George regularly appears at conferences throughout the world speaking on subjects such as conducting pedagogy, performance of wind literature, and commissioning new music. He is also sought internationally to sit on adjudication panels.

He is also a participating member in several professional scholarly organizations.

He was one of five candidates auditioning for the position of music director during a very exciting season. It is our belief that Dr. George will take us to great places during the next journey of this orchestra.
